IPL 2020, Match 35: KKR thump SRH in Super-Over victory

IPL 2020, Match 35, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sun Risers Hyderabad - Kolkata Knight Riders win in the Super Over

Sunday, Oct 18, 2020, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

As was the case in the ongoing IPL 2020 season, KKR once again struggled with the bat after SRH chose to bowl first in this match. Opener Shubman Gill struggled to get going as he scored just 36 runs off 37 deliveries (SR: 97.30)! Rahul Tripathi (23 off 16) and Nitish Rana (29 off 20) scored twenties each! Andre Russell (9 off 11) once again had a forgettable game with the bat!

Eoin Morgan (34 off 23) and Dinesh Karthik (29* off 14) shared a 58-run stand for the sixth wicket which was only broken on the final ball of KKR’s innings. Courtesy of this 6th wicket stand, Knight Riders managed to get to 163/5 in their 20 overs. Among SRH bowlers, Natarajan bagged 2 wickets while Vijay Shankar, Rashid Khan and Basil Thampi bagged a wicket each. Vijay Shankar was economical too as he conceded just 20 runs from his 4 overs.

During the chase, Sun Risers tried two experiments at the top of the order sending in Kane Williamson as opener and Priyam Garg at No. 3. Williamson (29 off 19) scored at a brisk rate but Garg failed with the bat as he scored just 4 runs off 7 deliveries. Captain David Warner who demoted himself to No. 4 played a healthy hand scoring an unbeaten 47 runs (off 33 deliveries) to push the game into a Super-Over.

Lockie Ferguson who is playing for KKR for the first time this season bowled superbly as he accounted for 3 wickets and conceded just 15 runs from his 14 overs. Among other KKR bowlers, Pat Cummins, Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Mavi bagged a wicket each.

Meanwhile, the contributions with the bat from Manish Pandey (6 off 7) and Vijay Shankar (7 off 10) are vey minimal for SRH in the context of the chase! Young Abdul Samad played a helping hand to Warner in the death overs scoring 23 runs off 15 deliveries. With 18 needed off the final over, Warner scored four boundaries as they managed to score 17 runs to finish the game in a tie!

Super Over:

SRH Batsmen: David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Abdul Samad
KKR Bowler: Lockie Ferguson

KKR Batsmen: Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik, Shubman Gill
SRH Bowler: Rashid Khan

Ferguson bowled a brilliant delivery upfront to clean up David Warner in the first delivery of Super Over. A double in the second delivery which almost caught Jonny Bairstow short of the crease. A direct throw was the need of the hour then but the throw from long on just missed the stumps by a whisker! That doesn't matter as Ferguson cleaned up Samad with another brilliant delivery! In reply, KKR took 4 deliveries to score these 3 runs without losing any wicket.

KKR pacer Lockie Ferguson has been adjudged as the 'Player of the Match' for bowling brilliantly in the match as well as in the Super Over!

Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders - 163/5 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill - 36, Eoin Morgan - 34, T Natarajan - 2/40, Vijay Shankar - 1/20) defeated Sun Risers Hyderabad - 163/6 in 20 overs (David Warner - 47*, Jonny Bairstow - 36, Lockie Ferguson - 3/15, Pat Cummins - 1/28) in a Super Over
