IPL 2020, Match 42: Varun five-for keep KKR alive in playoff race

IPL 2020, Match 42, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Delhi Capitals - Kolkata Knight Riders won by 59 runs

Saturday, Oct 24, 2020, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

Brilliant comeback by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who bagged a huge 59-run victory against Delhi Capitals (DC) in a near-perfect game in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (Oct 24). Varun Chakravarthy starred with the ball defending a huge total while out-of-form Sunil Narine and Nitish Rana scored half-centuries each with the bat which helped KKR get to that huge total on the board.

After being sent into bat first, KKR lost two wickets inside powerplay - Shubman Gill (9 off 8) and Rahul Tripathi (13 off 12). And the wicket of Dinesh Karthik (3 off 6) in the eighth over turned things bad to ugly for Knight Riders. However, Narine (64 off 32) and Rana (81 off 53) both scored fifties each then as they stitched a 115-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The century-stand not only helped KKR recover from early losses but also got them to a huge  score of 194/6 in 20 overs. Among Delhi bowlers, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Marcus Stoinis bagged two wickets each. None of the three Indian bowlers for Delhi bagged a wicket in this game. Axar Patel bowled just an over in the match while Ravi Ashwin conceded 45 runs from his 3 overs without a wicket. Uncapped Tushar Deshpande conceded 40 runs from his 4 overs without a wicket.

During the chase, KKR bowlers were all over Delhi batsmen! Under pressure Pat Cummins removed both their openers - Ajinkya Rahane (0 off 1) and Shikhar Dhawan (6 off 6) - cheaply. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant steadied the chase for a while with a 63-run stand for the third wicket. But KKR spinner Varun Chakravarthy spun a web later on around Delhi batters to become first player to pick up a five-for in IPL2020.

In the end, Delhi managed to score only 135/9 in 20 overs conceding a 59-run victory to Knight Riders. Varun bagged 5 wickets while Cummins finished with 3 wickets and Lockie Ferguson bagged the other wicket to fall in Delhi’s innings. Varun Chakravarthy bagged ‘Player of the Match’ award for his brilliant bowling spell in this much-needed victory for Knight Riders.

Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders - 194/6 in 20 overs (Nitish Rana - 81, Sunil Narine - 64, Anrich Nortje - 2/27, Kagiso Rabada - 2/33) defeated Delhi Capitals - 135/9 in 20 overs (Shreyas Iyer - 47, Rishabh Pant - 27, Varun Chakravarthy - 5/20, Pat Cummins - 3/17) by a margin of 59 runs
