Windies name two new captains for Bangladesh tour

Cricket West Indies have announced their squad for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh as part of which three ODIs and two Test matches are scheduled to be played in Chattogram and Dhaka. The two Test matches in this tour will be part of World Test Championship while the three ODIs will be first games for Windies in the ICC World Cup Super League.

Many experienced players Jason Holder, Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran have opted out of this tour owing to Covid-19 concerns. Fabian Allen and Shane Dowrich are unavailable for this tour of Bangladesh owing to personal reasons.

“The CWI COVID-19 policy allows any player to opt out of selection for an overseas tour, only when based on the player’s own safety fears or concerns. Such decisions will not impact their consideration for future selection,” stated Cricket West Indies in their press release.

In the absence of regular captains for this tour, West Indies have named stand-in captains for this tour. Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood have been named as captain and vice-captain for the Test squad while Jason Mohammed and Sunil Ambris have been named as captain and vice-captain of the ODI squad.

The tour will kick start with the first ODI match in Dhaka on Jan 20 and will continue till Feb 15 with the Test series. The first two ODIs will be played in Dhaka (Jan 20 & 22) while the third ODI (Jan 25) and first Test match (Feb 03 – 07) will be played in Chattogram. And the second and final Test match will be played in Dhaka from Feb 11.
