In what comes as a recent development, opener Kraigg Brathwaite has been named as the full-time captain for the West Indies in the Test match format. This implies all-rounder Jason Holder who was earlier made West Indies captain in all the three formats is now sacked from the role from all the three formats of the game! In case you missed it, Kieron Pollard is their current limited-overs captain.
Holder was earlier appointed as Test captain in the year 2015, taking over reins from the then captain Denesh Ramdin. In his 37 Tests as captain, West Indies had won 11 Tests, lost 21 and drew 5. On the other hand, Brathwaite has earlier led Windies in seven Test matches alongside being the deputy for Holder. For the record, Brathwaite led Windies to victories in two Tests and lost five.
To support Brathwaite’s case, he led an inexperienced squad to a 2-0 Test series victory in Bangladesh. Almost all of their senior players opted to sit out of the tour but somehow Windies managed to affect a whitewash on that tour! However, appointing a captain based on just a performance from one series might not have an impact for long or maybe it might?! Only time will tell.
“We all believe that Kraigg is the right man to lead our Test side at this point in time and I’m delighted that he has accepted the role. In the recent Test series against Bangladesh, Kraigg was able to motivate his players to play to a very high level and create the culture we are looking to establish where the team showed a collective determination to fight and a real hunger for success,” said Roger Harper, Lead selector of West Indies.
Reacting to his appointment as Test captain, Kraigg Brathwaite said: “It is a huge honor to be given the Captaincy of the West Indies Test team. I feel extremely proud and humbled that the Board and Selectors have given me the opportunity and responsibility to lead the team. The recent Test Series win in Bangladesh was a fantastic achievement and I’m really looking forward to the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka and I’m excited about what I believe this team can achieve in the future.”
West Indies are currently playing the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka at home. As part of the same tour, West Indies are set to set to play 2 Test matches starting from March 21. This upcoming Test series would be a new challenge for captain Kraigg Brathwaite and his team at home.
