Delhi Capitals who had done great in the last two seasons have been hit hard with an injury blow even before the season started. Their captain Shreyas Iyer injured himself in the first ODI of the recently concluded 3-match ODI series against England at home and had been eventually ruled out of the next two games of the series. He was earlier expected to miss a part of the IPL but with the appointment of a new captain Iyer’s participation in the upcoming 14th edition of IPL is all but certain!
The 23-year old wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant who has been in prime touch with the bat in the recent past has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Delhi Capitals side in the upcoming season. He has proven his worth with the bat in both Australia tour and against England at home. This will be the greatest of opportunities Pant has received so far in his career. For the record, this will be first time Pant will be leading a side in IPL tournament. On the other hand, Delhi state side is the only team Pant has ever led in his professional career.
“Under Shreyas’ captaincy, our team reached newer heights, and he is going to be missed immensely. In his absence, the franchise has collectively picked Rishabh to lead the team this year. While it has come under unfortunate circumstances, it is a tremendous opportunity for him to grow further. I wish him all the best in his new role,” said Kiran Kumar Grandhi, DC Chairman & Co-owner.
“Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I’ve always harbored. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff, and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can’t wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals,” said an elated Rishabh Pant after the appointment.
Delhi Capitals will kick start their campaign in IPL 2021 with their first game against Chennai Super Kings on April 10 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This will be a massive opportunity for both Rishabh Pant and Delhi Capitals to start on a higher note. At the same time, it will pose a great challenge for the team in the absence of their regular and experienced captain Shreyas Iyer.
