New Zealand defeated Bangladesh by a margin of 28 runs in the second T20I of the series at McLean Park in Napier to take an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the 3-match series. Glenn Phillips starred with the bat while Tim Southee starred with the ball as New Zealand register this series-winning victory.
After being sent into bat first, New Zealand put on a decent show with the bat scoring close to 10 runs per over. Though none of the top 4 get going, Glenn Phillips (58* off 31) and Daryl Mitchell (34* off 16) scored briskly towards the end to get them to 173/5 in 17.5 overs. Rain stopped play at that point putting NZ’s innings to an end as they did not bat again in this match. Mahedi Hasan was the pick of Bangladeshi bowlers with 2 wickets while Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam bagged a wicket each.
Once rain relented, the match officials have announced a revised target for Bangladesh. At the start of the chase, the revised target was 148 runs from 16 overs to win. However, the revised target was once again revised after 9 balls were bowled in Bangladesh’s innings without any further rain intervention! Due to miscalculation earlier, the revised target was incorrectly announced. After 1.3 overs into Bangladesh’s innings, the revised target for Bangladesh was 170 in 16 overs. However, it was later revised to 171 in 16 overs. Confused?!!! So are the players on the field!
During the chase, Bangladesh opener Mohammad Naim cost them the game as he consumed 35 deliveries for his 38 runs. Soumya Sarkar scored a quick half-century (51 runs off 27 balls) but was in vain as none of his team members provided support from the other end. In the end, Bangladesh ended with 142/7 in 16 overs to concede the match to hosts by a margin of 28 runs. Tim Southee, Hamish Bennett and Adam Milne all shared two wickets apiece while Glenn Phillips picked up his maiden international wicket!
Glenn Phillips has been adjudged as the Player of the Match for his unbeaten half-century and a wicket. With this 28-run victory, New Zealand have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the 3-match T20I series. The third and final T20I of the series is scheduled to be played at Eden Park in Auckland on Thursday (Apr 01).
