The National Selectors of Team India on Friday (Mar 19) have named an 18-member squad for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against England. Suryakumar Yadav made a mark in the ongoing 5-match T20I series with contributions both with the bat and on the field. As a result, he earned a maiden call-up into the ODI squad for the upcoming England series. Besides Suryakumar, Prasidh Krishna and Krunal Pandya have also been included in the squad for this series.
There will sure be a competition between Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill for the opening spot alongside Rohit Sharma. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant have been named in the squad as wicket-keepers. Considering the current form, Pant is a certain favorite to take gloves in this series. On the other hand, Rahul (if picked) needs to put up a big score in the fifth T20I to throw his name for the ODI series. So far he scored just 14 runs from 4 T20Is against England with 3 Ducks in the first 3 games!
Even though both Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were named in the squad after a long time, both of them might not be picked for the same match. It would be interesting to see if left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya would make his debut in the upcoming ODI series. Being a member of RCB, it would be certain Washington Sundar would be playing all the three ODIs under the leadership of Kohli in this series!
Among pacers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar finally returns to the ODI side after a long time. It would be interesting to see both the Sun Risers Hyderabad pacers Bhuvi and T Natarajan bowling in tandem in this series. Looking at India’s pace battery, Prasidh Krishna might not make his ODI debut in this series unless India wins the first two ODIs.
Earlier, India won the 4-match Test series against England by a margin of 3-1. The ongoing 5-match T20I series is currently level 2-2 with each team winning the alternate game in the series. The fifth and final T20I will be played on Saturday (Mar 20) in Ahmedabad. The 3-match ODI series will kick start with the first match of the series on March 26. The second and third ODIs will be played on March 26 & 28 respectively. All the 3 ODIs of the series will be played in Pune.
India’s squad for England ODI series: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Yuzvendra Chahal, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur
