South African limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour of Sri Lanka. He sustained a fractured thumb injury owing to which he walked off the field as retired hurt and did not return to bat again in the innings!

During the 26th over of South Africa's run-chase, Bavuma took a direct hit on his right thumb. Unfortunately, he couldn't avoid the throw from the fielder. On the other hand, Bavuma had unknowingly hit Sri Lankan opener, Avishka Fernando, earlier in the match with a throw on his waist. However, Avishka took a little break to recover and went on to register his third century in this format of the game!
"Proteas captain, Temba Bavuma, has been ruled out of the remainder of the white ball series in Sri Lanka after a freak accident resulted in a fractured right thumb. Scans have indicated a fracture and Bavuma will return to South Africa as soon as possible to consult a specialist. The timelines for return to play will be defined subsequent to that," stated Cricket South Africa in their media release.
They have named spinner Keshav Maharaj to lead them in the ongoing 3-match ODI series in Sri Lanka. The captain for the 3-match T20I series which is to be played after the ongoing ODI series is yet to be named!
"Keshav Maharaj will take over his [Bavuma's] role as captain in the ODI series and the National Selection Panel will meet to determine the T20 captain," added the media release.
Hosts Sri Lanka defeated South Africa by a margin of 14 runs in the first ODI on Thursday (Sept 02). The second ODI of this 3-match series will be played at the same venue (RPS, Colombo) on Saturday (Sept 04).
