SL vs SA 2021: South Africa level series with big win in 2nd ODI

A rain-curtailed match but South Africa did not lose their cool throughout as they defeated the hosts, Sri Lanka, by a margin of 67 runs! Janneman Malan with his third century and Tabraiz Shamsi with his maiden 5-wicket haul starred for the victors in this match as they levelled the 3-match series by 1-1.

It was a delayed start because of the wet outfield which was caused by persistent rain the night before! In the beginning, the game was reduced to 47 overs aside. During Sri Lanka's run chase, rain made an uninvited appearance and Sri Lanka's innings was reduced further down to 41 overs!

South Africa - 283/6 in 47 overs

Opener Janneman Malan (121 off 135) scored his third ODI century in just his 9th game in this format. He got superb support from the other end with Reeza Hendricks (51 off 54) and Heinrich Klassen (43 off 27) contributing with the bat! Malan shared a 96-run stand for the 2nd wicket with Hendricks and an 86-run stand for the 4th wicket with Klassen. These two partnerships guided them to a competitive total of 283/6 in 50 overs.

Chamika Karunaratne has been the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers having conceded just 24 runs from his 5 overs besides picking up 2 wickets. Dushmantha Chameera with 2 wickets and Wanindu Hasaranga & Danajaya de Silva with a wicket each are the other wicket-takers for the hosts in this innings!

Sri Lanka - 197 all out in 36.4 overs (Target: 284 in 47 overs; 265 in 41 overs)

Chasing 284 runs to win, Sri Lanka were off to a worst start losing their first 3 wickets with just 19 runs on the board! Charith Asalanka scored his half-century (77 off 69) but couldn't take his team over the line! His 64-run stand with captain Dasun Shanaka was Sri Lanka's best in this innings. Another rain delay during Sri Lanka's innings revised Sri Lanka's target to 265 in 41 overs.

Chamika Karunaratne played an entertaining knock of 36 runs off just 23 balls but he too departed with the asking rate going sky high with each delivery! South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi bagged his maiden 5-wicket haul in this format as Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 197, conceding a 65-run victory for the visitors!

Player of the Match:

It was a tough fight between Malan and Shamsi for this award as they both contributed to this victory! Eventually, Malan was adjudged as the Player of the Match for his 121 runs off 135 deliveries with 9 fours and a six.
