India name new captain for ODIs; Kohli sacked

In what comes as a piece of breaking news for the Indian cricket fans, opener Rohit Sharma has been appointed as India's full-time ODI captain. Virat Kohli served India in this post since early 2016 after the then captain MS Dhoni has stepped down from the stating that India should have a single captain across all the formats!

With this latest announcement, Rohit Sharma will lead India in both T20Is and ODIs while Virat Kohli will remain as the Test skipper. On the other hand, there is no official news that Virat Kohli himself had stepped down from the role. This seemed like a decision taken by the management and selectors alone keeping in mind that India should have a single captain across limited-overs formats.

Rohit Sharma had led India in 10 matches so far as part-time captain and had a great record! With 8 wins out of 10 games, Rohit had a winning percentage of 80 in this format so far. The challenges, however, as a part-time captain certainly differ from that of a full-time captain. But Rohit had proved himself as captain whenever the opportunity had arrived at his doorstep!

Rohit Sharma's full-time as ODI captain will kick start with the ODI series in South Africa early next year in January! The three-match series between India and South Africa will be played in Paarl (Jan 19, 21) and in Cape Town (Jan 23).

Moreover, Rohit Sharma had also been appointed as vice-captain of the Indian Test side for the South Africa series. A T20I captaincy followed by ODI captaincy and Test vice-captaincy, the year 2021 can't get any better for Rohit Sharma!
