Though Root registered his first Duck in 2021 in the first innings at Gabba, he came back well in the second innings and was unbeaten on the score of 86 at the stumps on Day 3. In the process, he smashed two records for an England player in this format of the game!

Batting on 24* in the second session on Day 3 at Gabba, Joe Root got to 1479 Test runs in 2021, bettering his own record of scoring most Test runs in a single Calendar year! His previous best was 1477 runs in Tests played in 2016.

Root did not stop there as he went on to become the leading run-scorer in Tests in a single calendar year for England. With his score in the late 20s, Root surpassed England's former captain Michael Vaughan's tally of 1481 runs which he scored in the year 2002. Vaughan got to his tally in 26 innings while Root surpassed him playing in just his 25th innings.

There is no stopping Root with the bat this year. He is also within the touching distance of breaking a long-standing record of most Test runs in a calendar year. Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf is currently the leading run-scorer in Tests in a calendar year with 1788 runs in 2006.

Joe Root is going strong in the second innings at Gabba and at the most, four more innings are still left for him in this calendar year. He has all the chances in the world to surpass Yousuf and take the record for himself! At stumps on Day 3 at Gabba, Joe Root is undefeated on 86* with a total of 1541 runs against his name!
