Stellar year with the bat in Tests for Joe Root!

England Test captain Joe Root had great success with the bat in the calendar year 2021. He scored runs everywhere he toured and each opponent he played against. With the kind of form, he was in with the bat, he had a real good shot at taking the record of scoring most Test runs in a single calendar year for his own. But he missed it in the end. Nonetheless, it was a great year for Root with the bat!

Root has scored a total of 1708 runs in the 29 Test innings he played in this calendar year 2021! To understand why he was the greatest this year with the bat, you need to look at the rest of the players on this list! Rohit Sharma is placed 2nd on this list with 906 in 21 innings while Dimuth Karunaratne with 902 runs in 13 innings is the only other player this year to have amassed over 900 runs in Tests!

Root scored 6 centuries this year out of which two were double hundreds, both scored overseas - one was at Galle (228) and the other was at Chennai (218)! His two other 100+ plus scores were in the 180s - one was at Galle (186) and the other was at Lord's (180*). Root also has four fifties this year. Overall, he had an average of 61.00 this year in Tests with the bat.

Joe Root ended the year 2021 having himself stationed at the third position in the list of players with 'most test runs scored in a calendar year'! Mohammad Yousuf with 1788 runs in the year 2006 and Viv Richards with 1710 runs in 1976 are at the first two positions on this list.

The England captain needed to score 109 runs in their second innings at MCG but was dismissed after making 28 runs and ended up at the third position. He also became the only third player in history to score over 1700 Test runs in a calendar year! Let's see if Root is gonna continue his tremendous form with the bat in the upcoming 2022 year as well!
