Bangladesh have registered their maiden victory on New Zealand soil with an 8-wicket victory over the hosts at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui! Bangladesh lost all the 32 games across all the formats they played in New Zealand thus far before registering this superb victory in this first Test at Bay Oval!
Credit to Bangladesh batters as they helped them take a superb 130-run lead in the first innings! Four half-centuries (Mominul Haque - 88, Liton Das - 86, Mahmudul Hasan Joy - 78, Nazmul Hossain Shanto - 64) propelled Bangladesh to 458 in their first innings in reply to New Zealand's 328 all out in the first innings. Devon Conway scored a brilliant 122 but the match result was not in his favor!
During the second innings, home team New Zealand were able to waive off the 130-run lead losing just 2 wickets! And then the magic spell from Ebadot Hossain happened! NZ were soon reduced to 147/5 at stumps on day four with Ebadot claiming 4 of them! And the wicket of Ross Taylor on the second delivery of Day 5 helped Ebadot complete his maiden 5-for in Tests!
Taskin Ahmed too shone with the ball in the second innings with a 3-wicket haul after being wicketless in the first innings! Ebadot eventually registered a 6-for as NZ were bowled out for just 169 runs in their second innings. Bangladesh were set a target of just 40 runs which they happily scored in just 16.5 overs losing 2 wickets!
Ebadot Hossain bagged the Player of the Match for his valiant effort with the ball. With this victory, Bangladesh have taken lead in this 2-match series by 1-0. The second Test match will be played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch beginning on Sunday (Jan 09).
