Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Test match as he has been tested positive for COVID-19 during the practice match against Leicestershire last week. As he has not fully recovered, the Indian selection panel made the hard decision to promote their vice-captain as captain for this match!
In an unexpected turn of events, Jasprit Bumrah who was earlier named as vice-captain of the Test side will now lead the Indian Test side in the rescheduled Edgbaston Test match. Bumrah will become the 36th player to lead India in the Test format. It has been a brilliant achievement for Bumrah but at the same time this might not be a better decision from the team's point of view!
Bumrah has got no experience in leading a side and he is, moreover, the best bowler on the Indian Test side. We have seen what captaincy will do even to the best all-rounders over the years! What may be the reason, India shouldn't lose the Edgbaston Test to retain the series!
On the other hand, Team India is going through a rough patch as far as captaincy is concerned this year so far! They have had five captains so far making Bumrah the sixth captain this year (so far!). Rohit Sharma (11 matches), Rishabh Pant (5), KL Rahul (4), Hardik Pandya (2), and Virat Kohli (1) were the others so far to lead India across all the formats this year.
