Afghanistan thump Bangladesh to advance to next round

Afghanistan with a clinical performance thumped Bangladesh in the 3rd match of the Asia Cup 2022 tournament at Sharjah. Restricted Bangladesh to just 127 before chasing down the target with 9 balls to spare to become the first team from Group B to qualify for the next round in the tournament.

Toss Update: Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first.

Having opted to bat first, Bangladesh scored 127 on the board losing 7 wickets in 20 overs. It was one disaster of a performance with the bat that saw tigers post just a below-par score on the board! They were reduced to 28/4 after opting to bat with Mujeeb bagging all the top 3 wickets!

After an early collapse, Mosaddek Hossain (48* off 31) and Mahmudullah (25 off 27) breathed life into Bangladesh's scorecard as they managed to get them past the 120-run mark! Mujeeb and Rashid starred with 3 wickets apiece which boosted Afghanistan's chances in this game!

Afghanistan, chasing 128 runs to win, managed to score 131 runs losing just 3 wickets in 18.3 overs. Though both their openers had poor strike rates, Najibullah Zadran (43* off 17) covered all the deliveries with a superb knock. Ibrahim Zadran (42* off 41) too contributed very well with the bat in this successful run-chase.

Match result: Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by a margin of 7 wickets.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been adjudged as the Player of the Match for his crucial contribution of 3-16 from his 4 overs. With this thumping 7-wicket victory, Afghanistan qualify for the next round of Asia Cup from Group B. Now the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on Thursday (Aug 31) has become an eliminator with the winner advancing to the next round.
