Green, Carey star as Australia beat Kiwis in the first ODI

Cameron Green, Alex Carey with the bat, and Glenn Maxwell with the ball starred as Australia comfortably defeated New Zealand in the 1st ODI of the 3-match series in Cairns. The match was a complete rollercoaster where both teams had their chances and the home team, Australia, finally held on to a brilliant victory!

Toss Update: Australia won the toss and opted to field first.

After being sent into bat first, New Zealand scored 232 on the board losing 9 wickets in 50 overs. There were 3 scores in the 40s - Devon Conway (46), Kane Williamson (45), Tom Latham (43) - but none get on to make a big score! Maxwell bagged 4 wickets and Hazlewood bagged 3 wickets as NZ only made an above-par score in their full quota of 50 overs.

Australia, chasing 233 runs to win, managed to chase down the target losing 8 wickets in 45 overs. They were reduced to 44-5 early on and were looking in deep trouble at that stage. Cameron Green and Alex Carey stitched a 158-run stand for the 6th wicket to help them to rise their stakes in this run-chase! Carey got dismissed on 85 but Green remained unbeaten on 89* as the hosts defeated NZ by 2 wickets!

Trent Boult was the star bowler for Kiwis as he registered bowling figures of 4-40 from his 10 overs. He also delivered 2 maiden overs in his spell! It was his spell that got the hosts into a bit of trouble early on in the run-chase!

Match result: Australia defeated New Zealand by a margin of 2 wickets.

Cameron Green has been adjudged as the Player of the Match for his crucial contribution of 89* not out off 92 deliveries with 10 fours and a six. Australia, with this victory, have taken a lead of 1-0 in this 3-match series with the 2nd ODI on Thursday (Sep 08).
