New Zealand crush home team Australia in Super 12 opener

Openers and bowlers helped New Zealand comfortably defeat Australia in the Super 12 opener of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. New Zealand went into this game as underdogs but shocked the home team at SCG with a thumping victory upfront!

Toss Update: Australia won the toss and opted to field first.

After being sent into bat first, New Zealand scored 200 on the board losing 3 wickets in 20 overs. Finn Allen got them off to a flier scoring 42 runs off just 16 deliveries which includes 5 fours and 3 sixes. His blitzkrieg innings at the top allowed their middle-order play slowly - Kane Williamson (23 off 23) and Glenn Phillips (12 off 10). 

Conway and James Neesham (26* off 13) played freely at the death sharing an unbeaten 48*-run stand for the fourth wicket in the last 4 overs! Josh Hazlewood (2-41) and Adam Zampa (1-39) were the wicket-takers for Australia in this match!

Australia, chasing 201 runs to win, managed to score 111 losing 10 wickets in 17.1 overs. Complete disastrous performance with the bat as the home team lost wickets at regular intervals. Having failed to register a single double-digit score in his last 7 innings, Glenn Maxwell is the top scorer for Aussies with 28 runs in this innings.

Maxi played reverse sweeps and switch hits to get some runs and was also dismissed playing a switch hit! Pat Cummins (21 off 18) was the only other Aussie to cross the 20-run mark in this innings! All the bowlers were brilliant for New Zealand in this innings with Tim Southee (3-6) being their best bowler tonight! Mitchell Santner (3-31) also bagged 3 wickets tonight!

Match result: New Zealand defeated Australia by a margin of 89 runs.
