Sri Lanka beat the Netherlands to qualify for Super 12

Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga helped Sri Lanka comfortably defeat the Netherlands in the 9th match of the First Round of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition to book a seat in the Super 12 round.

Toss Update: Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first.

Having opted to bat first, Sri Lanka scored 162 on the board losing 6 wickets in 20 overs. Kusal Mendis was the star of this batting unit in this innings as he scored 79 runs off 44 balls including 5 fours and 5 sixes. Charith Asalanka (31 off 30) also contributed with the bat. Incidentally, Asalanka started his innings on the hat-trick delivery which he survived comfortably off Paul van Meekeren!

Meekeren dismissed Pathum Nissanka and Dananjaya de Silva off consecutive deliveries in the 7th over and Asalanka successfully survived the hat-trick delivery! Meekeren was also the pick of Dutch bowlers with figures of 2-25 from his 4 overs.

The Netherlands, chasing 163 runs to win, managed to score 146 losing 9 wickets in 20 overs. Opener Max O'Dowd stood tall in this chase scoring an unbeaten 71 runs but unfortunately, he cannot take his team home in the end!

The injury to Roelof van der Merwe was their biggest concern in this innings. He bowled 3 crucial overs with the ball conceding just 16 runs before walking off and came out to bat at no. 11 and O'Dowd couldn't take singles inside the circle. This was a concern but they got as close as 16 runs to the target.

Match result: Sri Lanka defeated the Netherlands by a margin of 16 runs.

Kusal Mendis has been adjudged as the Player of the Match for his crucial contribution of 79 runs off 44 deliveries with 5 fours and 5 sixes. With this victory, Sri Lanka are qualified for the Super 12 race.
