Sri Lanka crush Ireland in their Super 12 opener

All-round Sri Lanka thumped in-form Ireland in the Super 12 match of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. Lankans chased down the target in just 15 overs to boost their Net Run Rate upfront in this mega event.

Toss Update: Ireland won the toss and opted to bat first.

Having opted to bat first, Ireland scored 128 on the board losing 8 wickets in 20 overs. Opener Paul Stirling got them off to a good start with his 25-ball 34 while Harry Tector (45 off 42) scored big during the middle overs. With little support from the rest of the batters, they only got to a below-par total on the board.

Each of the 6 bowlers used by Sri Lanka in this innings claimed at least a wicket while Maheesh Theekshana (2-19) and Wanindu Hasaranga (2-25) bagged two wickets each. Theekshana was under pressure going into this game but he controlled his economy rate very well in this run-chase.

Sri Lanka, chasing 129 runs to win, managed to score 133 losing 1 wicket in 15 overs. Opener Kusal Mendis scored an unbeaten 68* runs while Dananjaya de Silva (31 off 25) and Charith Asalanka (31* off 22) provided ample support with the bat at the other end.

Match result: Sri Lanka defeated Ireland by a margin of 9 wickets.

Kusal Mendis has been adjudged as the Player of the Match for his crucial contribution of 68* runs off 43 deliveries including 5 fours and 3 sixes.
