Toss Update: New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first.
At the beginning of the match, rain caused a delay in the toss and interrupted the game. The match eventually started after a delay of about four hours and was reduced to 34 overs per side. England was put into bat first and scored 226 runs, losing seven wickets in 34 overs. At the 12.1 over mark, England was struggling with a score of just 55 runs and had already lost five wickets, making a low total seem very possible.
England's total was expected to be between 150 to 160 after Moeen Ali was dismissed at 103-6 in the 21st over. However, Liam Livingstone had different plans and remained unbeaten on 95* at the end of their innings. Sam Curran also played brilliantly, scoring 42 runs off 35 balls, and together they helped England achieve a superb total on the board.
New Zealand failed to chase down the target of 227 runs in the allotted overs, losing all 10 wickets in just 26.5 overs and scoring only 147 runs. As the wickets kept falling, the pressure mounted on them, and they eventually lost the match by a margin of 79 runs. The English bowlers David Willey and Reece Topley took 3 wickets each, while Moeen Ali and Gus Atkinson contributed with 2 and 1 wicket, respectively.
In the first 4.2 overs of the match, England's score was reduced to 8-3, with Trent Boult taking all three wickets. It was an impressive spell of bowling from the left-arm pacer which put England under immense pressure during the powerplay. And winning from that position was an amazing achievement for the England team drafted by Livingstone and Curran!
Match result: England defeated New Zealand by a margin of 79 runs.
Liam Livingstone was awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance in the second ODI of the 4-match series. He scored an unbeaten 95* off 78 deliveries, hitting 9 fours and a six. The third ODI is scheduled to be played at The Oval on Wednesday, September 13th.
