England, New Zealand to kick start the ODI World Cup 2023

Defending Champions England will take on New Zealand in the ODI World Cup opener in Ahmedabad on Thursday (Oct 05). This is going to be a repeat of the Final match of the 2019 edition. The controversial Final in 2019 was won by England in terms of boundary count after the match and the Super Over ended in a tie!

The rule was modified post that incident to have as many Super Overs to be played as possible until a clear winner is decided based on the number of runs scored! Even though most of the fans still can't digest the Super Over drama in 2019, the action now shifts to the 2023 edition in India!

New Zealand is always the underdog in the ICC tournaments who performs superbly and England are in a super position in international cricket showing aggression irrespective of the format! The tournament opener in Ahmedabad would be no short of any entertainment!

Trent Boult and Kane Williamson would be the players to watch out for from the New Zealand side. Boult did not feature much in the Kiwis' colors since he gave up his central contract to play in T20 leagues across the globe. On the other hand, Williamson has not played a proper professional cricket game since he was ruled out of action with an injury he sustained in the IPL 2023 edition!

There is no Jofra Archer for England who delivered the super-over victory for England! All eyes will be on Joe Root who had on a few occasions about his role in this attacking England side!

Head to Head record:

The face-off record between these two teams was pretty much even with both teams winning 44 matches each out of 95 games played! Three matches ended in a tie while four games were abandoned!

In the 10 World Cup matches, England won 4 games while New Zealand won 5 games. The other was the infamous tie in the 2019 ODI World Cup Final at Lord's.
