Visitors New Zealand are going into the second Test against India in Mumbai with their regular captain Kane Williamson having been ruled out with a long-standing recurring left elbow injury. However, Williamson seemed to have worsened his injury during the first Test match against India in Kanpur which ended in a thrilling draw! Kiwis opener Tom Latham has been entrusted with the captaincy responsibilities in the absence of Williamson. Incidentally, Latham played a crucial role with the bat in both innings which helped New Zealand get away with a draw in Kanpur.
The injury news has been made public by the New Zealand head coach Gary Stead: "It's been a really tough time for Kane having to deal with such a persistent injury. While we've been able to manage the injury through the year and the T20 World Cup, the shift to Test cricket and the increased batting loading has re-aggravated his elbow.
Tom Latham led New Zealand to a memorable 8-wicket victory over England in June earlier this year with Kane Williamson rested ahead of the WTC Final! It would be a great opportunity for Latham to replicate the same success in Mumbai which will help New Zealand to win the Test series as well!
