Injured Pathum Nissanka to miss first Test against Australia

The injury to Pathum Nissanka has thrown a wrench into Sri Lanka's plans for their Test series against Australia, compelling the team to adapt swiftly to fill the void left by one of their key openers. Nissanka's absence, especially after his recent form, necessitates a strategic overhaul in the batting order and team composition.

Oshada Fernando who is already part of their squad likely step into this vacant opening slot, bringing a different style of approach up top. On the other hand, Sri Lanka expects Nissanka to recover and to join the squad ahead of the second Test match.

Fernando, known for his resilience and ability to bat long innings in the domestic circuit, might offer a more defensive start compared to Nissanka's aggressive approach. This change could mean a shift in the team's opening strategy, potentially focusing on building a solid foundation against Australia's formidable bowling attack, rather than an early assault.

Beyond the opening, the middle order will need to adjust to the altered dynamic. Players like Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva might have to play more pivotal roles, not just in scoring runs but also in guiding the team through the pressure of facing an Australian side on home soil. Their experience will be crucial in mentoring the younger or less experienced players who might be thrust into more prominent roles due to Nissanka's injury.

Moreover, this situation could lead to tactical shifts in Sri Lanka's overall game plan. The team might lean towards a more conservative approach, focusing on consolidation rather than acceleration, especially in the first innings of the first Test match. Sri Lankan bowlers too should bowl tighter lines, aiming to restrict Australia's scoring to compensate for any potential shortfall in the batting in the absence of Nissanka.

This adaptation is not just about filling a spot in the lineup; it's about recalibrating the team's mindset, strategy, and even the psychological preparation for the series. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka have also added Isuru Udana and Sonal Dinusha as standbys to the squad as skipper Dananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis also just made it to the squad recovering from injuries.

The first test of the 2-match Test series between Sri Lanka and Australia will be played from 29th January. The second test match will be played from 6th Feb. Both these Test matches are scheduled to be played at the Galle International Stadium in Galle.
