New Zealand's women's cricket team captain, Sophie Devine, has announced she will take an unspecified break from domestic cricket to prioritize her well-being. At 35 years old, Devine has been a pivotal figure for the White Ferns, leading them to victory in the T20 World Cup in October 2024. Her contributions include 3,990 runs and 107 wickets in ODIs, showcasing her all-round capabilities. Her break from cricket is fully supported by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Cricket Wellington, and her WPL team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who all emphasize the importance of player well-being.

Liz Green, NZC's Head of Women's High Performance Development, stated that the most crucial aspect is ensuring Devine has a good break, receives proper support, and returns to cricket when she is fit and well. Devine has previously taken a mental health break in 2021, reflecting NZC's ongoing commitment to player welfare.

While her future in cricket remains undecided, an announcement regarding her playing career will be made in due course. This move underlines the shifting focus in sports towards mental health and well-being, with the cricket community showing solidarity in Devine's decision to step back temporarily.
