Australia Women announce squad for New Zealand tour

Australia’s women’s cricket team is set to embark on a three-match T20I tour of New Zealand, commencing March 21, 2025, at Eden Park, Auckland. The 14-player squad, announced on February 26, 2025, will face the White Ferns (New Zealand Women) in a series critical for both teams ahead of the ODI World Cup later this year.

However, the absence of captain Alyssa Healy, sidelined by ongoing knee and foot injuries, marks a significant shift for the reigning T20 world champions. Tahlia McGrath will lead the side, with Ashleigh Gardner as her deputy, while wicketkeeping duties fall to Beth Mooney, supported by debutant Nicole Faltum.

The 25-year-old Victorian earns her maiden call-up after consistent domestic performances, offering a glimpse into Australia’s future. Chief selector Shawn Flegler praised Faltum’s reliability and Mooney’s versatility behind the stumps, emphasizing a blend of experience and youth.

The squad retains its core strength with stars like Ellyse Perry, Sophie Molineux, and Annabel Sutherland, fresh off standout WBBL seasons. Phoebe Litchfield and Grace Harris bolster the batting, while bowlers Megan Schutt and Alana King aim to exploit New Zealand’s conditions.

Facing a New Zealand side buoyed by their recent T20 World Cup triumph, Australia will look to assert dominance despite Healy’s absence. Matches in Mount Maunganui (March 23) and Wellington (March 26) follow the opener, promising a fiercely contested series. With Healy targeting a return for the World Cup, this tour tests Australia’s depth and adaptability.
