Lahore tri-series opener brings a mixed bowling day for Shaheen Afridi

In the opening match of the ODI tri-series in Lahore on February 8, 2025, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan's left-arm pace sensation, took to the field with his characteristic flair and energy. Facing New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium, Afridi's performance was a mixed bag, reflecting both his potential and the challenges and pressure involved in international cricket.

Afridi started his spell with an impactful first over, securing the early wicket of Will Young, showcasing his ability to swing the ball and generate pace. His initial seven overs were particularly noteworthy, where he managed to keep the scoring rate in check, conceding only 33 runs while taking two wickets. His bowling during this phase was a testament to his skill in troubling the batsmen with his length and movement.

However, as the innings progressed, Afridi's figures escalated. In his last three overs, particularly against the aggressive Glenn Phillips, Shaheen was less economical, giving away 55 runs including 25 runs alone in the 50th over. This shift highlighted the difficulties in maintaining consistency against a batsman in form, especially during the death overs where the margin of error is very minimal.

Despite this, Shaheen's ability to strike early and disrupt the New Zealand top order demonstrated why he's considered one of the premier fast bowlers in the world. His performance in the match was a reminder of his talent but also of the areas where he needs to sharpen his skills, particularly in managing the game's latter stages. As the tri-series continues, all eyes will be on Afridi to see how he adapts and bounces back.
