In a significant setback for the Pakistan cricket team, young and aggressive opener Saim Ayub has been officially ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to an ankle injury he sustained during a Test match against South Africa in Cape Town. The injury, which occurred in a Test match, has sidelined the promising batsman for at least ten weeks, dashing any hopes of his participation in the tournament set to commence on February 19.

Ayub, recognized for his stylish left-handed batting and off-break bowling, was seen as a key asset for Pakistan, especially after his notable performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and international matches. However, his recovery timeline, as confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), extends beyond the duration of the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to run until the 9th of March.
The PCB has been cautious about rushing Ayub back into action, with Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasizing the priority of ensuring the young player's long-term career over immediate tournament participation. "We are not going to risk his future career just for the Champions Trophy. He is our asset," Naqvi stated.
In Ayub's absence, Fakhar Zaman, known for his match-winning century in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against India, is set to take his place in the playing XI straightaway. Pakistan will face New Zealand in the tournament opener in Karachi on Wednesday (Feb 19).
