This brilliant performance not only marked his arrival on the international scene but also set a new record for the highest individual score on an ODI debut, eclipsing the previous record of 148 set by Desmond Haynes of the West Indies back in 1978.
Breetzke's innings was a blend of technique and aggression, scoring his 150 off 148 balls with 11 fours and five sixes. His century came off 128 balls, and he continued to dominate the New Zealand bowling attack, contributing significantly to South Africa's total of 304 for 6. Despite his individual heroics, South Africa fell short as New Zealand chased down the total, thanks to a brilliant performance by Kane Williamson, who scored an unbeaten 133 to guide his team to victory.
This match was part of a tri-series also involving Pakistan, but Breetzke's performance stood out as one of the highlights, showcasing his potential and leading to discussions about his future in the South African cricket team, especially with the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy in mind. Breetzke's innings not only broke a 47-year-old record but also placed him in an exclusive club of players who have scored a century on their ODI debut, highlighting his talent and the promise he brings to South African cricket.
The only complaint if it comes from this innings that his batting strike rate with which he batted. Certainly, that is an improvement area for the youngster going forward.
